Director, Software Engineering

Global R&D – Software & Electronics

At Ambu, we are advancing our ambition to achieve global leadership in endoscopy. Software is at the core of this journey, enabling intelligent, connected solutions that improve patient care and clinical outcomes.

In our ZoomAhead strategy, EndoIntelligence is central as a unified platform that combines hardware, software, and AI to deliver integrated endoscopy solutions across the full procedure journey. Today, our software foundation is centered on embedded Linux and Qt-based applications, and we are expanding into AI as well as cloud and edge capabilities. To support this, we are strengthening our Software & Electronics organization and scaling our software capabilities.

We are now looking for a Director, Software Engineering to lead and evolve our software development organization and play a central role in delivering on this EndoIntelligence ambition.

A role with strategic and operational impact

In this newly created role, you will lead our Software Engineering department, bringing together Embedded Software, Application Software, and DevOps teams into one cohesive and scalable organization.

You will report directly to the Vice President, Software & Electronics, and be part of the leadership team shaping the direction of software and electronics across Global R&D.

The Software & Electronics leadership team includes a dedicated leader for Agile Transformation & Delivery; together, the leadership team co-drives our journey to build predictability and alignment at scale, while you ensure the engineering organization is equipped with the capabilities, technologies, and ways of working needed to support it.

You will lead a team of experienced software managers and hold your own department budget. The department currently consists of approximately 30 professionals in Ballerup (Denmark) and Augsburg (Germany) but is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.

As Director, you will be responsible for shaping how we build software at scale—ensuring strong engineering practices, efficient delivery, and a setup that can support increasing demand and complexity.

Key responsibilities

Your responsibilities will span strategic direction, organizational leadership, and operational excellence. You will:

  • Set the direction and evolve the Software Engineering organization
Define and drive the vision and strategic direction for software development, and continuously evolve structure, roles, and the operating model as the department scales—ensuring alignment with Ambu’s strategy and EndoIntelligence ambitions.
  • Lead and develop leaders
Manage and develop a team of line managers across software engineering disciplines, strengthening leadership capability and building a high-performing organization.
  • Drive scalable and efficient software delivery
Ensure we can deliver EndoIntelligence reliably at scale—building engineering capacity and efficiency, improving predictability, and establishing a release cadence that consistently ships high-quality customer value.
  • Collaborate across functions and influence broadly
Work closely with stakeholders across R&D, QA, and Product Management to ensure alignment between technology, product direction, and customer value.
  • Evolve the technical platform and capabilities for EndoIntelligence
Shape the platform, architecture, and technology roadmap across embedded, application, and emerging cloud/edge/AI capabilities—ensuring security, scalability, and long-term maintainability.

What success looks like

In your first 12–18 months, you will have:

  • Scaled the organization with a setup that can handle increasing demand and higher complexity, with clear roles, interfaces, and a setup that works across sites.
  • Built the engineering operating model and capabilities needed for predictable and efficient delivery at scale.
  • Set a coherent technical platform direction that reduces rework, supports scalability, and enables long-term EndoIntelligence ambitions.
  • Delivered on the EndoIntelligence roadmap, meeting agreed milestones and demonstrating increased capacity to ship valuable increments on a regular cadence.
  • Built a strong leadership and talent base with high-performing managers, clear succession coverage, and key capability gaps addressed through hiring and development.

Your profile

You are a senior software leader with the ability to operate across strategy, execution, and people leadership.

You bring:

  • Proven experience scaling software engineering organizations through growth, increasing complexity, and organizational change.
  • Experience managing leaders and building high-performing teams in a complex, multi-site setup.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the ability to work across functions and organizational levels.
  • The ability to set and communicate clear direction while ensuring operational execution.
  • A strong technical foundation and understanding of embedded systems, ideally with a background as a software developer, architect, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of how to build the engineering capabilities, systems, and ways of working needed for scalable, high-quality software delivery.
  • Experience driving adoption of AI-assisted engineering practices and tools to improve developer productivity and software quality.

Experience from the medical device industry or other regulated environments is an advantage, but not a requirement.

Who you are

You are a visible and ambitious leader who can set direction and bring others with you.

You combine technical credibility with strong communication skills and are comfortable engaging with both engineers and senior stakeholders. You are not only focused on your own organization but understand how to create impact across the broader business.

You thrive in an environment with increasing complexity and growth, and you are motivated by building something that scales and makes a real impact in people’s lives.

A unique opportunity

This is a unique opportunity to:

  • Build and scale a strategic software organization
  • Work at the intersection of software, hardware, AI, and MedTech
  • Play a key role in shaping Ambu’s EndoIntelligence journey
  • Influence how software is developed and delivered across a global R&D organization

Working at Ambu

You will join a global and collaborative R&D organization with teams across Denmark, Germany, and Malaysia. We value close collaboration, trust, and a shared ambition to improve patient care through innovation.

The role is based at our office in Ballerup (Denmark) or Augsburg (Germany) and involves approximately 20–30 travel days per year.
