Senior R&D Engineer

Do you want to drive innovative product development from the very beginning? Are you eager to take responsibility for the development of innovative medical devices that make a real difference for patients and healthcare professionals worldwide? Do you thrive in a collaborative environment where technical expertise, initiative, and teamwork are highly valued? And would you like to join a successful international company experiencing continued growth?

Ambu is currently looking for a Senior R&D Engineer to join our Engineering Design team in Augsburg, Germany. In this role, you will become part of a passionate and diverse team of engineers working together to develop the next generation of medical devices.

We are seeking an experienced engineer who has been involved throughout the entire product development lifecycle—from early concept generation and feasibility studies through design, verification, validation, industrialization, and market launch. You bring strong technical expertise combined with the drive to move projects forward, overcome challenges, and deliver results.

In this position, you will thrive if you naturally take ownership, create momentum, and support those around you. You may currently work as a senior engineer, technical specialist, or design lead, but regardless of title, you are someone who can influence others, remove obstacles, and help teams succeed. You combine a hands-on engineering mindset with the ability to see the bigger picture, balancing technical details with product, business, and project objectives.

The role is based at our Augsburg site in Germany. To support flexibility and collaboration, we offer a hybrid working model with three days per week in the office and two days working remotely.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will play a key part in the development of Ambu's future products. You can therefore expect to:

  • Drive and influence product development activities throughout the full development lifecycle, from concept to market launch.

  • Identify user needs, define design inputs and specifications, and contribute to the early innovation phases of development projects.

  • Act as a key technical contributor and trusted sparring partner within cross-functional development teams.

  • Lead technical discussions and support decision-making to ensure projects progress efficiently and successfully.

  • Develop new and improve existing mechanical design solutions, components, and assemblies for Ambu's product portfolio.

  • Translate technology concepts into robust prototypes and manufacturable product solutions.

  • Take responsibility for the mechanical design and construction of functionalities, parts, and assemblies, ensuring quality, performance, and safety.

  • Ensure products are manufacturable at scale, meet functional requirements, and remain within target cost frameworks.

  • Maintain development documentation in compliance with FDA, ISO, and other applicable regulatory requirements, including risk assessments, FMEAs, and tolerance analyses.

  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across Germany, Denmark, and Malaysia, as well as with suppliers, physicians, users, and external development partners.

  • Support and mentor less experienced engineers, contributing to a culture of collaboration, learning, and technical excellence.

Suggested Candidate Profile

Skills and experience can be gained in many different ways, and we understand that the ideal candidate cannot be fully defined on paper. However, you are likely to succeed in this position if you bring many of the following qualifications:

  • A completed degree in Mechanical Engineering, Medical Engineering, or a related technical or scientific discipline.

  • Extensive experience working across the full product development cycle, ideally within medical devices or another highly regulated industry.

  • A proven track record of driving technical development projects and delivering results in complex environments.

  • Strong CAD experience using systems such as Creo, SolidWorks, CATIA, Inventor, or similar.

  • Experience designing mechanical and plastic components for high-volume manufacturing, including injection molding, extrusion, and tool design.

  • The ability to evaluate manufacturability and make practical engineering decisions based on real-world production requirements.

  • Experience developing safety-critical products.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and align diverse teams.

  • A collaborative mindset and genuine interest in helping colleagues and teams succeed.

  • The ability to balance attention to detail with a broader strategic perspective.

  • Professional proficiency in written and spoken English.

Experience with micromanufacturing, precision components, hearing aids, or similar small-scale mechanical products would be considered an advantage.
