Systems Engineer (Technical Lead)

As a Systems Engineer at Ambu, you will act as the technical subject matter expert for the medical product under development and be accountable for the technical solution. You will maintain the high-level technical overview, enabling collaboration between subject matter experts, team members, and stakeholders.
You will assist the Lead Systems Engineer (Technical Lead) in large, complex development projects or serve as the systems engineer/technical lead in smaller line-extension projects—driving and owning the technical solution and making trade-off decisions when needed. You will also create, facilitate, and review product documentation such as user needs, requirements, design inputs, design outputs, and technical reviews.
You will be part of the global Systems Engineering team and report to the Systems Engineering Team Manager. The position is based in Augsburg, Germany, but applicants for Ballerup, Denmark will also be considered.
This role requires strong expertise in integrating electronics with hardware and mechanical systems. Familiarity with software development principles is highly advantageous.
Your Responsibilities
- Support, define, plan, document, and technically manage product development activities to ensure delivery in accordance with design objectives and development plans.
- Identify and understand user needs through engagement with key stakeholders.
- Analyze and decompose user needs, business needs, and system requirements into product requirements, including design control and development requirements.
- Lead technical decision-making, balancing trade-offs between electronics, mechanics, and software.
- Assist in building and leading the technical team in coordination with the Lead Systems Engineer, Project Manager, and Line Managers.
- Align and reuse product architecture and design solutions within the R&D organization.
- Investigate and scope new products within existing or new clinical areas based on Ambu’s technology and capabilities.
- Establish and maintain the technical overview, including interfaces and compromises between technologies.
- Work, document, and test according to FDA and ISO requirements.

Most likely, you come from a similar job within the medical device industry or in a consultancy that deals with the medical device field.
You are likely to succeed if you have:
- A degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar.
- Experience integrating electronics and mechanical systems.
- Experience in developing medical devices and have a thorough understanding of design control, including working with requirements in a medical setting, or another regulated industry.
- At least 5 years of product development experience as a lead design engineer, project engineer, or similar; experience as a technical lead is an advantage.
- A strong systems engineering mindset focused on robust, first-time-right designs.
- Experience in plastic and mechanical design, especially for electro-mechanical display devices, would be an advantage, as well as an understanding of embedded software or system-level software architecture.
- Ability to work independently with a pragmatic, practical approach to assignments.
- Commitment to knowledge sharing and best practices in a global team environment.
Your contact base is broad, and you will collaborate with Ambu’s global organization, all departments involved in product development projects and externally with users, knowledge center’s, technical partners, and suppliers. Our production sites are in Malaysia, China, USA and Mexico and we work together with KOL’s and development centers throughout Europe, Asia and the US, so travel is to be expected with this position - approximately 30 days per year.
