Senior Test Automation Engineer
Are you passionate about software quality and test automation? Do you enjoy developing automated tests, improving regression coverage, and applying your technical expertise within a highly skilled engineering team? Are you motivated by mentoring colleagues, driving technical excellence, and helping teams continuously improve the way they work?
The Test & Verification team at Ambu is looking for a Senior Test Automation Engineer to help ensure the quality and reliability of our innovative medical software products.
This role combines hands-on test automation development with senior technical responsibility. You will be a key contributor to the development and maintenance of our automated regression test suites while sharing your expertise, helping shape best practices, and supporting colleagues working with test automation across teams.
In addition, you will support agile ways of working within a small and highly collaborative team by facilitating selected team activities and helping drive continuous improvement initiatives when needed.
Based at our Innovation Hub in Augsburg, you will work in a hybrid setup with 3 days in the office and 2 days from home. We believe that regular in-person collaboration fosters stronger teamwork, faster problem-solving, and meaningful knowledge sharing, while still providing flexibility and work-life balance.
We are building the next generation of medical software and connected medical devices, and we need a colleague who sees test automation as an engineering discipline, values quality, and enjoys working in an international environment where innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning are key to success.
Key Responsibilities
You will play a key role in strengthening Ambu's automated testing capabilities while actively contributing to the development and execution of automated tests for our software products.
Your responsibilities include:
-
Acting as a senior technical contributor within automated regression testing and sharing expertise with colleagues across the Test & Verification team.
-
Driving a unified test automation effort across products and teams, building and maintaining a scalable test automation ecosystem with balanced coverage from atomic tests through component, integration, and system tests to end-to-end workflows.
-
Developing, maintaining, and executing automated regression tests for software-driven medical devices.
-
Driving improvements in test automation practices, test coverage, and test reliability.
-
Providing technical guidance, mentoring, and expertise to colleagues working with automated testing.
-
Reviewing automated test implementations and promoting best practices across projects.
-
Supporting test planning, test execution, defect investigation, and root-cause analysis.
-
Working closely with Software Development and Test & Verification colleagues to ensure new functionality is adequately covered by automated tests.
-
Collaborating with international engineering teams to continuously improve automation frameworks, tooling, and testing approaches.
-
Contributing to improvements of test environments, tools, and automation practices.
-
Supporting software verification activities throughout the development lifecycle.
-
Generating and maintaining verification evidence and documentation required for regulatory compliance.
-
Helping ensure compliance with relevant medical device regulations and standards, including MDR, IEC 62304, ISO 13485, and ISO 14971.
-
Facilitating team activities such as planning sessions, backlog refinement, retrospectives, and knowledge-sharing workshops when appropriate.
-
Working closely with the Product Owner and team members to promote transparency, alignment, and efficient delivery.
Qualifications
We are looking for a strong test automation engineer who enjoys combining deep technical expertise with technical leadership.
-
A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
-
5+ years of experience working with software test automation.
-
Experience developing automated tests using Python, C#, JavaScript, or similar technologies.
-
Experience with automated regression testing.
-
Experience working with CI/CD-based test execution.
-
Experience acting as a senior technical contributor, technical lead, or mentor within software testing or test automation initiatives.
-
Experience working in Agile environments.
-
The ability to drive technical decisions, establish best practices, and influence engineering teams through expertise rather than formal authority.
-
A strong technical mindset and curiosity to understand complex systems end-to-end.
-
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
-
The ability to collaborate effectively across functions and international locations.
-
Proficiency in English, both spoken and written.
Skills
Experience or knowledge in the following topics will be an advantage in the job:
-

-
Test automation using Python or similar scripting languages.
-
API, integration, and end-to-end testing.
-
GUI testing using Squish or similar tools.
-
Test case design and test execution.
-
Test result analysis and failure investigation.
-
Linux-based development and test environments.
-
Embedded systems and hardware/software interaction.
-
Experience with SIL/HIL/SysIL verification.
-
Software verification and validation activities.
-
Test documentation and traceability.
-
Medical device software development.
-
IEC 62304, ISO 13485, and ISO 14971.
-

-
ISTQB certification (an advantage, not a requirement).
We work in a highly collaborative and agile environment where open and honest discussion is an integral part of how we solve complex problems. We value curiosity, continuous learning, and a willingness to challenge the status quo just as much as technical expertise.
